What’s the one thing you’ve learned over time that you wish you knew when you started out?

There is no red-tile-roof house on the Aegean where famous writers all go to work in relative leisure. There might be 20 jobs now where you’re set for life, but the rest of us will be hustling forever.

That sucks (I love the Aegean!) but it’s freeing, too. One of my best friends called his big career move “getting off other people’s ladders,” and that struck me as wise advice. You want to write beautiful stories about things you care about? You can do that, so who cares if you don’t end up writing profiles for The New Yorker? You can move around within the profession in more interesting ways than people could before.

Tumblr's Recently Fired Editorial Team Just Missed Out on a $371,000 Payday:

If there’s a reason I leave Tumblr, it won’t be because of Yahoo (directly). It’ll be because of this. The whole time this deal was going down on Sunday, I wondered to myself about how unfortunate it was Storyboard had been slashed roughly a month prior. It appears from this article, that was a very calculated decision.

Sure, business is business and not everyone can win. I love Tumblr. I appreciate what Mayer is trying to do at Yahoo. But Chris Mohney, one of the three on Storyboard, was my very first editor and I’ll always feel a certain strange allegiance to him because of that.

On the CIA World Factbook: “Coastline: 19,924 km” (approximately 12,380 miles)

So, who’s right? I understand that both take into account the shorelines of territories. Is there a difference between a shoreline and a coastline?

Weird post for a Saturday evening.

But if you’re ever at a loss for what to get a kid between the ages of, say, 4 and 8, a book by Amy Krouse Rosenthal will do the trick.

“Chopsticks” is a particularly cool book and the new one, “Wumbers,” which the above photo references, was on my kid’s reading wish list for the library.

Cool design for parents (as children’s books go) and desired by kids. Everyone wins! Plus, you know, it’s a BOOK and not some ridiculous plastic piece of junk.

Oh my word.

This breathtaking installation was created for the 50th Biennial of Venice in 2003, and found it’s home in San Staë church on the Canale Grande. It’s entitled Falling Garden, and is the work of collaborating Swiss artists, Gerda Steiner and Jörg Lenzlinger. I honestly don’t know if I’m more jealous of them and their obvious artistic genius, or those very lucky people lying underneath this fantastically beautiful falling garden… I think it might be a tie.
