    Um, wow.

Sotheby’s will offer the capsule on the 50th anniversary of Gagarin’s flight. “Looking at it, you get a sense of how brave Gagarin was,” says Sotheby’s vice chairman David Redden. “It was like being shot into space inside a small, round elevator without any control over it whatsoever.” He estimates that the Vostok will fetch between $2 million and $10 million. Today in old photos we love, via the Lufthansa team: a mechanic cranking the engine—by turning the propeller with his hands—before takeoff on a Junkers F13.

Fyi, a little game worth noting:

Monday marks the inaugural flight of the A380 from Frankfurt to JFK. The twenty-three crew members from that flight will be in SoHo. One will be on a mission to give away a pair of round-trip biz-class tickets to Europe. For clues on the whereabouts of the official cabin crew member holding the prize, follow @Lufthansa_USA.

Love this B&W pic of an old Lufthansa plane. Also like their new giveaway.
